I like the concept and I didn't expect the big reveal, but it felt unrealistic. Also, it wasn't as enthralling or thrilling as I had hoped. He is a personal hero of mine, and I admire the way he used his influence and energy to help create a national holiday. And in the early days of Reagan, no less. (This is one of the meanings of the title, "The Last Holiday," by the way.) My jaw hit the floor. I thought I had figured it out… Plot. Twist. Not only was I wrong, but I also wasn’t even in the realm of close. Fantastic… The twist in this one will slap you in the face. You won’t see it coming. I couldn’t put this book down. I had to know!’ KKEC Reads, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat and I was hooked from the beginning to end’ Goodreads reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Predominantly about how he came to be on the Stevie Wonder tour that culminated in a huge concert in Washington to garner support for a public holiday in recognition of Dr Martin Luther King's birthday it is also a partial biography. I say partial, as details I would like, probably as I'm a nosy person are missing, maybe this is due to his rather sudden death and rather than the memoir that this is he did intend a fuller biography which he does hint at in this book.I must admit that this is the best psychological thriller I have read so far. This book is about friends (with secrets) going camping after a long time and as the secrets start to spill, everything changes drastically.

However, it got a bit confusing to tell the characters apart. I think multiple narrators would have made this more enjoyable. Narration ~ overall fine, but this could have benefited from multiple narrators since each POV was told in the 1st person and there was not a differentiation in the narrator voice. Then Annie's dead body is found and it seems that someone in the group is the killer, but who? Everyone has a motive to kill Annie, so everyone seems suspicious. I found this tension very well built up and I didn't know who to trust. I thought the NYT book review was actually tepid -- pointing to gaps in his story (no discussion of drug abuse), disorganized thoughts in places. But what is fascinating is that this is Gil Scott Heron is writing an account of his very interesting and amazing life at age late-50-something or thereabouts after a decades (plural) long gap struggling with substance addiction. And yet still he writes such a beautiful book on his life and culture.

Genres covered in this novel include Women's Psychological Fiction, Crime, Thriller And Mystery Adventures, Thriller, Mystery, Suspense, Psychological Thriller, Literary Fiction, Suspense Thriller, Psychological Literary Fiction, Psychological Fiction, Contemporary Fiction, Noir Fiction, Womens Psychological, Domestic Thriller, Mystery ,Thriller & Suspense Literary Fiction, Crime Thriller, Suspense Thriller, Psychological Suspense, Murder Thriller, Domestic Fiction, Domestic Thriller and Thriller amongst others. Some of his songs, like "Home Is Where The Hatred Is," "The Bottle," and "Your Daddy Loves You," dispense with the humor and cut straight into a core of loneliness and addiction to a point much deeper than race. There are twists and turns all through and I absolutely wasn't ready for the ending - I might have had a little emotional episode - definitely invested in each of these lives!
