Description

This lens achieves a compact, lightweight and high performance by taking advantage in this product of the hallmarks of the Micro Four Thirds System standard to achieve a maximum aperture of f2.

Engineered to extremely high standards incorporating fast AF, bright constant aperture and lightweight. I actually managed to get a reasonably sharp result at 1/10, but not consistently and to be reasonably sure I’d draw the line at 1/20th.

That said, it is important to say what the lens, or perhaps more fairly, the system can and can’t do. The physical aperture diaphragm construction is composed of 9 blades which produce a circular shaped aperture that should result in pretty circular blob highlights for out of focus elements. Each lens will have its own character and that’s usually demonstrated by its handling of contrast, colour, the quality of out of focus areas, and of course sharpness. Its large capacity allows storage of multiple cameras and interchangeable lenses, while its overall compact size allows you to carry it on board when flying. In absolute raw files with no correction, chromatic aberration was clearly apparent at 40mm, much less so at 150mm, which is sort of the opposite of what you’d usually expect.Given that all Olympus compact system cameras – and the Panasonic GX7 – feature an in-body anti-shake system, it is not surprising that the Olympus M. Adding the teleconverter was another pleasant surprise, there was minimal degradation in sharpness (and I’ve conducted these tests at the extremes of each end of the focal range) which sets this device ahead of my Canon x1.

Results are excellent thanks to the bright constant aperture and advanced optical design with ED glass elements.Below you can see these side by side, with a crop from each taking a closer look at the rendering of the specular highlights. from the lens tip) throughout the entire zoom range with no loss of image quality thanks to the corrective effects the floating method provides. I will probably post some more samples of both the 40-150 +MC-20 and the 50-200 + EC-14 in the coming days.
