Ensuring our approach to teaching phonics and reading is accessible to all learners, regardless of background. Each class in KS2 has a class reading book which allows teachers share their own love of reading with their pupils. In Reception, we build from 10-minute lessons, with additional daily oral blending games, to the full-length lesson as quickly as possible. Interestingly, we’ve just had a book home that is “not decodable at any point using Little Wandle” according to this spreadsheet, but the book is branded as Phase 4 Little Wandle!

They also assess when children are ready to exit the Rapid Catch-up programme, which is when they read the final fluency assessment at 90+ words per minute. and the books are an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction to foster a love of reading in all children. It comprises classroom resources to support the SSP programme and a range of phonic readers that together provide a consistent and highly effective approach to teaching phonics. The 7+ books in the Big Cat Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised series are designed for children aged 7+ who need more practice to acquire phonics skills.Pupils are able to engage in discussions about plots and characters, recommend a book to a peer and evaluate an author's use of language and the impact this has on the reader. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. This progression is based on the DfE’s publication ‘Letters and Sounds: Improving Rates of Progress 2021’. At Wooburn Green, we understand that being able to read is the most crucial skill that we can teach our children as without it they will find it increasingly difficult to access other areas of the curriculum and their life chances will be significantly reduced. Reading skills are taught discretely five times a week in 30-minute sessions for all pupils in both KS1 and KS2. The first 5 weeks recap Phase 5 Phonics, the next 5 weeks teach bridging to spelling and the last 20 weeks are based around spelling.

We have a strong focus on language development for our children because we know that speaking and listening are crucial skills for reading and writing in all subjects. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. The books will be matched perfectly to the Little Wandle progression and will support all the Letters and Sounds phases.

This system judges the level of difficulties based on how many letters per word, how many words per page, how many lines per page, how many pages per book not on reading progression. By the end of the Autumn Term, we aim for all children to be able to blend to read words with Phase 2 sounds. I know they all develop differently etc etc but just keen to have a broad idea if DD is where she should be for her age. My DS is currently reading at the hardest end of Phase 2 (summer born reception) which probably equates to the easier end of red books using the list someone linked earlier.I’d agree with Biff, Chip and Kipper era books just being less words, some of the words in even the easiest bands of these books aren’t easy at all! Children leave Key Stage 2 as competent readers with a shared love of stories and a secure understanding of what they have read. As part of our commitment to ensuring all children can read and that no child is left behind, we will monitor how children are keeping up with the daily phonics sessions and will provide daily keep up sessions as and where needed. Revisit and review – Go through flashcards or allow the children to play a quickfire game to practise something they have learned before and help build their confidence.
