Destiny, on the other hand, is an only child living on a rundown estate with a sickly but devoted mum who constantly tells her that she's really the daughter of a famous former rock star. Instead, after following Harper into the beginning of a seemingly-unrelated case, we learn a very different truth about what has happened, a truth not hinted at in the premise and tangentially mentioned only once in the story. What I thought the author really did so very well was that feeling of being a new mum, she really pulled it off so well and then there were so many creepy books with the twins later on in the book – I don’t want to give away spoilers but sometimes the way they looked at people – CREEPY – and the talking!

Her writing makes you anxious and jumpy, worried that something will steal out of the shadows to take what’s yours.

I felt myself shift from believing her, to feeling that she was in the midst of a breakdown, back to believing that what she was going through was real. As the fourth Children's Laureate (2005-2007) she promoted the importance of sharing books, and reading aloud together. Danny and his second wife had three children, Sunset, Sweetie and Ace, they were very rich and lived in a landed property with three servants, but Danny wasn't really on good terms with Lucy. One day, Destiny and Sunset met and Destiny started telling Sunset that her father was actually her father too. He left his first family as soon as his first daughter,Destiny, was born and married another woman, Lucy, who was once his fan, leaving Destiny and his wife alone.

The written word isn’t like the movies; without any physical images, it falls to great writing and a very talented author to generate the same kind of visuals in my mind. She has written over 70 best-selling books, and several have even been adapted for TV – most famously The Story of Tracy Beaker. Even if you think yourself a factual person, Little Darlings will force you to entertain what’s laughably superstitious yet, in light of the evidence popping up and the deep conviction of the mother, unsettlingly possible. Little Darlings is a debut that feels like a debut, but I enjoyed enough of its elements that I would probably give this author another try in the future. There were scenes in this book that would have made me run screaming from the room if I ever had them happened to me.

Destinym aged eleven, is a normal girl living a normal life but her father is Danny Kilman, a rockstar. Little Darlings is her first novel, and has been optioned for screen by Free Range Films, the team behind the adaptation of My Cousin Rachel.

One of Jacqueline’s most successful and enduring creations has been the famous Tracy Beaker, who first appeared in 1991 in The Story of Tracy Beaker. The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award. After all the hassle of trying to get Destiny to meet her father, I also found the ending to be weak and abrupt and wish that moment had been more fleshed out. Best points are the depth of the characterizations, the details of Lauren’s postpartum struggle, and the uncertainty throughout the whole thing about whether Lauren is suffering from postpartum psychosis or whether the crazy woman who wants the babies really is fay.

To make up for failing, Sunset finds out Destiny's address, using the Danny Kilman fan-site, and sends her a letter and her leather jacket.
