It was irreverent and refreshing, witty and erudite, very much in a similar vein to Bridget Jones’ Diary and other women’s fiction hits that came out around that time. We have been a bold and influential voice in the church since 1888, standing up for traditional Catholic culture and values. Somehow, India Knight's writing manages to be hilarious, melancholy, insightful, and romantic all at the same time.

This is the difficult question when considering a retelling of a book that feels as fresh and alive as Mitford’s 1945 classic. The plot remains very much the same; Knight has taken few liberties, but has recast the beloved characters and story in a modern mould. My favourite passage is the list of Things That Uncle Matthew Doesn't Like - absolute comedy genius. Linda remains “soft-shelled as well as soft-hearted, with an overabundance of trusting optimism and friendliness”.

Of course, she is beautiful, with an innate sense of style; every girl wants to be her, every guy wants to be with her. It’s all an absolute hoot and Knight seems to be especially enjoying herself when it comes to Uncle Matthew, a man “of extreme and simple emotions” who weeps at the sight of particularly tragic old dogs and delights in trolling people on Instagram (“CLOSE YOUR MOUTH WHEN YOU SMILE”).

What it lacks in original storytelling, Darling more than makes up for in atmosphere and fresh jokes. I understand that using blank-space-Fran as narrator is a way of making the reader feel involved, but there should have been some serious conversations between the author and their editor at a fairly early stage about the wisdom of having much of the book narrated in great detail by someone who wasn't there and couldn't have known everything they describe, even if the characters who were there had told them.In a place she had determined to forget forever, both anticipated encounters and unanticipated revelations show her, and us, that sometimes life is neither fate nor chance: perhaps it’s nothing more than a little luck.
