Dan Amrich of GamePro and Gerald Villoria of GameSpot regarded the game as a run-of-the-mill adventure title, but considered it to be more challenging than expected, which Villoria attributed to the delay in Harry's Flipendo spell and the erratic enemy AI. However, in later parts of the game during the detention in the forest, it's possible to use the said charm on the trolls as there are no gaps to push them in with Flipendo (using it on them causes them to smack their own heads and if cast on them five times they will fall over and remain out cold). Nintendo Power was pleased by the variety of quests, and approved of the difficulty and level of detail. As you progress through the game (and the story), you learn new spells and find hidden items like Bertie Botts beans and wizard cards.

While older teenagers may snub this Harry Potter outing, there's still good mileage in the bespectacled chappie for younger players. This game follows the plot of 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', so if you've read the book and/or seen the film, you'll find it all quite straightforward - and it's not very difficult anyway. Finding that Black is innocent of all crimes, and looking out for Harry, the team defend Black from a horde of dementors, allowing him to escape.

The player's health is represented by the lightning bolts in the top left of the screen, and one is taken away for each time the player comes into contact with an enemy. Nonetheless, fans of both the film and books are likely to get some enjoyment out of the game, even if arguably it's inferior to the Game Boy Color version. Unique to this Harry Potter game, all characters have their own unique quotes for whenever they get hit by a spell. GameSpot were positive about the game, scoring 7/10 or above across releases, [21] with a high of 7.

When a mountain troll infiltrates Hogwarts, Harry and Ron notice Professor Severus Snape behaving suspiciously before they go to rescue Hermione from the troll. In this version of the game, Harry gets caught by Professor Snape instead of Filch, and Harry's detention in the forest isn't the same as the book or movie. Amrich and Harris lamented the scarce save points, with the former claiming that "you should expect to play for an hour or two each time you pick it up if you want to make real progress".

What if you could leave the nonmagical world of the Muggles behind and enrol in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? This effect lasts until you switch spells once more or enter a different room, though this effect is impossible to apply to Lumos' colour. In the case of prefects however, they will deduct points afterwards via them discovering Harry if he happens to cast a spell on them, since they'll by default use the unique student-quotes before speaking a prefect quote (though some prefects will deduct house points twice through this). The main dissapointment of the game to me though is that you don't get to fly the funky car at the start. Simply cast one of your spells with the colour you desire, then switch to the other spell of your choosing by casting it into a wall where its graphics will not occur. Frank Provo of GameSpot was very positive about the GBA game's recreation of the novel; saying "The main thing to keep in mind is that Prisoner of Azkaban on the GBA offers a fun way for Harry Potter fans to step into the shoes of their favorite wizard-in-training and experience firsthand everything that happened in the third installment of the series.
