It was the start of my second new life, in a city that had a spin of its own - a wilder orbit inside the earth's calm blue-green whirl. He has a divine knowledge of everything on this planet, could he not dig someone else to install as a replacement out of his unfathomably large brain if he didn’t want to do it himself?

This book argues that road-building was naturalised in the twentieth century to the point of common sense, integrating roadbuilding into a system of climate change denial hidden within a broad international development imperative. I really enjoyed this book that is a memoir/essay written as a series of entries in an encyclopedia. I sincerely hope that the author improve the quality and don't add any brainless scenarios in the further books. I’ve read the author’s previous book ‘The Loneliest Girl in the Universe’ and really enjoyed how gripping it was and the twists that were incorporated into it. I was really gripped by what was happening, especially as the ending was a ‘race against the clock’ kind of scenario which drove the story. She survived the apocalypse with her baby and toddler; she didn’t need her husband then and she still believes she doesn’t need him now. China’s navy is certainly already powerful enough to crush international piracy , which Zeihan predicts will be a major force in disrupting international trade after America’s withdrawal. Of course, there are plenty more great apocalypse and post-apocalypse novels that didn’t fit on this list, and I haven’t read enough books in translation in this genre, so as ever, please add on your own favorites in the comments. This was the first book I’ve read from the author, and like many first time reads I wasn’t sure what to expect. There is very little swearing in this book although the occassional s swear word in English and a swear word in Japanese is used a few times.

My favorite entries revolved around famous paintings, where the "point" of the painting is jettisoned to wax poetic on the calf muscles of an incidental figure in the background; I found the entry on his long-time boyfriend to be one of the most tender and moving things I've read in a while (describing a small boy's felt hat kept stashed in a closet: "the hat's dusty and slightly battered, as objects salvaged from childhood tend to be. Zeihan is never very clear about why he thinks America will simply withdraw from the role it has played as guarantor of global trade and security. The Trophy at the End of the World, the latest book in the Hidden Cumbrian Histories series, is officially published September 5, 2023. Everything east of the Mississippi has been destroyed by a nuclear attack; the scant survivors have been dosed with a bioweapon that has infected them with the plague (just to be safe, I suppose). We got a preview of such a shock when Covid threw global supply chains out of whack, and a war between the U. Highways to the End of the World explores the political economy of these ideas by focusing on the history of this phenomenon, and on the road-builders of South Asia themselves.

When this book showed up on my recommendations I read the blurb and rolled my eyes, litrpg ,end of the world, time travel, young/old man, blah blah blah, the idea isn’t new in the genre and seemed uninspired. A zombie novel for people who don’t read zombie novels and a literary novel for people who don’t read literary novels. In this compelling roadmap to a livable future, Indigenous sovereignty and climate justice go hand in hand. One of the classics of the genre, in which a student, Ish, emerges from a period of isolation and illness—he was bitten by a diseased rattlesnake—and steps back into the world to find almost no one left alive in it. Alam’s recent blockbuster hit slash literary darling has what may be the quietest apocalypse on this list, at least from our viewpoint. It introduces 7-year-old Wen and her fathers, Eric and Andrew, who are taking a family vacation at their remote New Hampshire cabin. Therefore, I skipped or glided over the many descriptions of eroticism which, while not a prude, I found a little overwhelming. Lepucki’s debut is probably most famous for being the book Stephen Colbert made famous, but it’s also a beguiling novel about love at the end of the world—though we never really learn what exactly tipped our present into this factionalized and urine-coated future. It doesn’t take a meteor or a nuclear missile to destroy civilization; all you need is a surprise epidemic of blindness, and men and women will destroy it themselves.
