Description

The first release in Craigellachie's Cask Collection is a 13-year-old single malt that was initially matured in combination of refill and re-char ex-bourbon barrels, before being finished for just over a year in Bas Armagnac casks from northernmost Gascony, France. They needed a Single Malt as an ingredient for White Horse Blended Scotch, so the distillery was designed to produce a very specific distillery style which the team replicate to this day.

We are now in tunisia on holiday and just gone our balcony and met a family from stoke who were drinking this . Warm rich vanilla crème patisserie, sweetness from brown sugar, then ripe apple, baked pastry, tart apple sauce, pear, perfectly ripe peach, some soft baking spices, and a touch of limestone.Producers also tend to really use up a cask until they can’t anymore which makes me wonder how much Armagnac influence one really gets. As the last few drams transferred from bottle to glass, I flicked open my laptop and punched in Craigellachie to Google. Craigellachie has long been a malt set aside mostly for blending apart from the odd independent bottling and the illusive Flora and Fauna bottling.

I think this is one of those cases where it’s a shame that you didn’t have a full bottle to review, because this is one that has a lot going on. I think we can say that Craigellachie walks that fine line between being approachable and having sufficient depth to appeal to the more seasoned whisky drinker. For this initial release, the spirit is initially matured in refill and recharred bourbon barrels and then finished in Bas Armagnac casks from the Gascony region in France. As the spirit bubbles away inside the still, it releases vapours which creep upwards after much refluxing and travel along the horizontal pipe at the top of the still – the lyne arm – to the zone where the gaseous spirit is converted back into a higher proof, liquid distillate. In Dramface’s efforts to be as inclusive as possible we recognise the need to capture the thoughts and challenges that come in the early days of those stepping inside the whisky world.Initially, the whisky matures in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks before undergoing a resting period of just over a year in Bas-Armagnac casks. Craigellachie was built in 1891 by the experienced whisky team of Peter Mackie and Alexander Edward. There is a spicy note which is rounded so I don’t attribute that to the spirit alone and so assume the casks had a little life left in them still.
