The illustrations in the manual are a bit on the small side, and are all in black and white (this would be expected in any manual though) – so you may need glasses/a magnifier if you struggle with your vision. Changing the sewing direction Sewing stretch fabrics Reverse sewing When sewing thin fabrics, the stitching may become misaligned or the fabric may not feed correctly. The manual is quite brief, however there are good basic instructions for the features of the machine as well as an instructional DVD.

If you're a more experienced sewer looking for a second machine to take to sewing classes then this also a good choice. Lifting the • machine by any other part may damage the machine or result in the machine falling, which could cause injuries. Keep ventilation • openings of the machine and foot control free from the build up of lint, dust, and loose cloth. If you already have presser feet that are compatible with this type of shank from a previous sewing machine, then in many cases you will be able to use the same presser feet on this model as well. Note that the adjustable stitch width control on this model appears to be fairly limited, and may not affect all of the inbuilt stitches. There is also only one buttonhole stitch option whereas some more advanced machines will have several shapes, but a simple rectangular buttonhole is all you really need, after all they’re usually hidden underneath your buttons! At Brother, we pour over 100 years of sewing expertise into every machine we make, whether it’s for a big manufacturer or a casual crafter – and we’ve carefully designed the L14S to ensure it’ll give you all the reliability and flexibility you need. However, this also means you have very little control over the stitches, so a hobby sewist would find it limiting. The included screwdriver is a flat metal piece, so is more slippery than a standard mini screwdriver. With a voltage of 240v we believe this machine is suitable to use in the UK, but it is always best to consult the information provided by the manufacturer (Brother) or consult a sewing machine distributor prior to purchase to ensure that the machine will work in your region if you are unsure.

This is an excellent option for new sewers or anyone who wants a second sewing machine to take to a class or club. Whether you are having trouble threading your machine, can’t work out how to change the stitch settings or just want to make sure you’re getting the most out of your sewing machine it is always best to have a copy of the manual on hand.In comparison to some higher-end machines the options are limited but really these 14 options are all that you need – the only missing stitches would be edge finishing stitches (which you can use zig zag stitch for), eyelets (not really an essential! The better your problem and question is described, the easier it is for other Brother owners to provide you with a good answer. I couldn’t sew perfectly straight with the standard foot, so many of my blind hem stitches didn’t catch the hem! To help you achieve the best possible stitch quality across different fabrics the Brother LS14 adjusts the tension of the upper thread using an Adjustable / Manual Control.

It doesn’t have speed control, or the ability to sew without the foot pedal (using the start/stop button). There is no speed control which can be useful for beginners or even for more advanced sewists when approaching corners/intricate sections.A screwdriver is also needed to remove the presser foot, whereas some machines come with a quick release button to swap the feet over – have a look for machine with this feature if you think fiddly screws might be an issue for you. A zipper foot comes included in the box, and the machine is supported with a 3 year manufacturers warranty. Full-size machines are usually wider than compact machines and this gives you slightly more space to manoeuvre the fabric around the needle area.

The top of the machine also has clear illustrations showing how to thread the machine and wind the bobbin.I do think a complete beginner would struggle the first time, but with the manual and a few practice attempts, I think you’ll be fine. Lovely machine, smooth and quiet am only a beginner and have done so much with the machine and learning more and more. Trial sewing Stop the machine with the needle in the fabric at the point where you want to change the sewing direction, and then raise the presser foot lever. More expensive machines have a better feeding system which solves this, like my Brother innov-is a150.
