Inisrun is a place where everyone’s business is everyone’s business, and the rumour mill is ever-churning. On the day of Henry and Keelin Kinsella’s wild party at their big house a violent storm engulfed the island of Inisrún, cutting it off from the mainland. There are numerous points within the story where O'Neill discusses the ease in which abuse within a relationship can be disguised as love.

In this bold, brilliant, disturbing new novel Louise O'Neill shows that deadly secrets are devastating to those who hold them close.Keelin and Henry Kinsella are prime suspects, having been vilified by the local residents of the island of Inisrun, where they live. First off big ol content warning for domestic abuse - both physical and psychological and coercion/controlling relationship. I loved the premise of this book, wherein a documentary crew decides to investigate and re-visit all evidence relating to a long unsolved murder. The big reveal came in the shape of an intense, and edge of the seat ending, which wrapped up every aspect of the story perfectly.

I felt immersed in the Island setting and the secrets that I had to unravel and not just the who but the why, and all the threads that led to that point. After facing years of neglect and physical abuse from her father, Laura is rescued by Pam Willis, a social worker. They don't like blow-in's like the Kinsella's and treat those who fall in with them (like Keelin) with similar suspicion. When the truth is revealed at the end, it isn’t the big twisty shocker some readers – myself included – would have been hoping for.

This is the kind of novel that’s best read on cold winter nights, where you can hide away from the world and truly lose yourself in the tension and subtle psychological drama at play. This amount includes seller specified domestic postage charges as well as applicable international postage, dispatch, and other fees. Imagine Emily Bronte crossed with a Netflix true-crime documentary and with a dash of Big Little Lies thrown in. with the identity of the murderer always concealed - except with the constant repetition, it comes as no surprise when revealed - just a relief that the whole boring ordeal is finally over.

But the tender moments in this book that showed Keelin and Alex talking Irish to one another was just lovely, and added an extra element to the book for me that I loved a lot. After the Silence is the latest novel from journalist and multi-award-winning Irish author Louise O’Neill. The reluctantly reliant relationship leads to deep rooted resentments that reinforce the locals’ suspicions of Henry and Keelin in the murder of Nessa.
